What Trend Are You Following In 2017??
April 3, 2017
I was asked the other day why I don't blog about style trends. Considering I'm a hairstylist, passionate about my profession and the companies I work with and, possibly, because I'm female this seems like a pretty legit question. In the moment I had some generic answer about being a rebel blah, blah, blah...
Believe it or not I've asked myself the same question and I always hit a wall of eye rolls and head shaking.
Don't get me wrong, if you want to talk trends, we can talk trends. I follow them, read updates from American Salon and endlessly stalk my favorite educators and stylists. I know beach wave perms are coming back for summer, rose gold isn't leaving yet and blondes are taking on a softer golden tone for summer. I also know I don't aggressively promote trends.
Between TV, magazines and social media we are bombarded with information and images. Everyday we are told what we should eat, how we should exercise, why our marriage isn't great, why our friendships will last forever and how we should look if we want to be beautiful. Let's be real, that list could go on for hours. It's a lot to keep up with! Seriously, it's exhausting!
So, as a professional in the beauty business, I'm here to say....I think it's bullshit....
Yup. You read that right, I did just say that.
I've been in this industry for a long time. I've met many amazing people. There's no doubt I'm blessed.
I've also worked with the client who endlessly follows the new trend. Stressed because it doesn't work with their hair texture, styling damage to force their curly locks to stay as straight as a board, broken hair to stay silver blonde because of an Instagram picture and/or text messages of tears and frustration because they can't create the perfect soft wave with their curling wand. It should be easy, right? It looked easy on the YouTube video so why can't they do it too?
There's always been talk about the pressure of looks/weight because of photos perceived as the latest trend but it's also a big problem in the hair department. No person is made the same. Some of these trends are just not realistic.
This is my belief and why I don't talk trends...
You're beautiful! Yes...YOU!
If you feel beautiful with long hair... GROW IT!
If bangs are "out" but you love yours...KEEP THEM!
You feel totally sexy with pink hair...AWESOME!
Natural hair is your thing...YOU DO YOU!
I will not promote anyone starting their day by fighting with themselves about how they look. "Why can't my hair look like so and so, why can't my eyeliner look like what's her name"....no, just no...
My job is not to make you look like this weeks poster child, it's to make you feel the most fabulous you. Not just for the time you're with me but day after day.
I want to you to stand tall and smile when you see yourself in the mirror. Catch a glimpse of yourself in the middle of the day and think "I'm loving my bangs/hair color/hair length"!
If you see a new trend that you want to try I'm excited to talk to you about it! If you love your hair now and it doesn't fall into the latest craze, that's great too!! I'm thrilled you love your look!
In the end of the day my only want for you is that you feel powerful, amazing and brilliant like I know that you are. No one had to hashtag it for me to know that about you. I didn't read it in a Facebook post or watch an Instagram story. That's just who you are.
OK! Small recap...
Don't do something just because everyone said to.
If you want to try a new look, I'm super excited to talk to you about it!
You feel your best as a redhead but blondes are all the rage..who cares...stay red.
