Keeping Up With The Joneses
June 2, 2017
Just recently I made an appointment with a company to have a service done that I, myself, offer at Wildflower. It's not often that I'm able to have a service done where no one knows what I do for a living.
I chose this company because of their reputation, knowledge of them in the professional world and , mostly, because of social media.
I've watched endless amounts of videos and Periscopes. Looked at Facebook and Instagram posts. Don't forget to add Facebook Live and Insta Stories. Sound familiar?
With all this digital stalking came a belief that I knew their life. I created a whole story of how their business world must be. Some things I understood because I have them at my job, some things I, personally, didn't want at my job and then other things....I wanted to know how to get! "Other things" would be a dream come true. "Other things" would make my work world complete. What am I doing wrong that I don't have "other things"?
Now, remember, I made all the information about that company up from what I watched in an Insta Story. Therefore, the "other things" I thought I needed were also a figment of my imagination.
Keeping Up With The Joneses.
We spend a lot of time watching small, planned views into other peoples lives and create beliefs on those few seconds of information. Depending on the topic I think quite a few of us also start questioning our own lives because of it. What was the last thing you "wanted something like that" looking at a photo/Facebook live/ meme about? Relationships? Job? Someone else's vision of success?
We want to say we aren't like that but we are. We've been raised that way. From the moment there was advertising we have been taught that we aren't good enough....we need more. I get it. That's their job! Show us perfect families, perfect homes or perfect friends and we want it. WE WANT IT ALL.
Back to my appointment..
The one I had already planned in my head exactly how it would be....
Can you guess?
The entire appointment couldn't have been further from my expectations. Don't get me wrong, my finished service was very well done. As for everything else...not my style. My business approach, desires and goals for experience are the opposite of this other company. That doesn't make one wrong and one right. What it does mean is I wasted moments of my life thinking I wasn't doing well over something that never existed. A thought I created over a minute video. While I was there I got to witness one of those minute videos being made.....not the same...
The Only Person You are In Competition With Is The Person You Were Yesterday.
Can I get an AMEN!?!
The only reality you can be sure of is in your own life.
The neighbor pulls up in a new car... ok.
Betty Sue has so many friends she goes out with and it's all on Facebook... ok.
Sam's Instagram shows he has the perfect job....ok.
You don't know their lives, you don't know their back ground story. You don't know how long they worked to get a new car. You don't know the sacrifice Sam made for his job.
We need to stop worrying about the Joneses and spend more time appreciating what we have, working for what we want and believing in our own moments...our own lives.
Forget the hype.
The only path you need to follow is your own... and skip the Facebook live about it.
